Strengthening Specialized Spinal Injury and Rehabilitation Services

On 27 August 2026, the Principal Secretary for Medical Services, Dr. Ouma Oluga, held a consultative meeting with the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital (NSIRH), Dr. Soren O. Otieno, who paid him a courtesy call at Afya House, Nairobi.

The meeting was attended by the Head of Division, Integrated Health Services, Dr. Andrew Muriithi, and Assistant Director Health Administrative Officer Mr. Joseph Nyamohanga, alongside other senior Ministry of Health NSIRH officials.

The discussions focused on key institutional priorities aimed at strengthening specialized spinal injury care and rehabilitation services, while improving the quality of care, patient experience, and health outcomes.

Key areas of discussion included specialized training and workforce development, patient-centred care, health financing and the Social Health Authority (SHA), technology and digitization, infrastructure development, and the modernization and expansion of diagnostic and clinical equipment.

The engagement also provided an opportunity to review progress on previous action points and explore further measures to enhance the delivery of quality, timely and patient-centred specialized services to patients with spinal injuries and other rehabilitation needs.

The continued collaboration between the Ministry of Health and NSIRH underscores the Ministry's commitment to strengthening specialized healthcare institutions and ensuring that patients have access to quality, timely and patient-centred services.
