Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about visiting, treatment, insurance, and rehabilitation at NSIRH.

Admission & Referral
How do I get admitted to NSIRH?

Most patients arrive via referral from a county or regional hospital after initial stabilisation. However, for critical emergencies, go straight to our Accident & Emergency Unit. We recommend calling our casualty line first: 0722-626-641.

Do I need a referral letter?

A comprehensive referral letter from a registered medical practitioner is required for non-emergency admissions. It should include the patient's diagnosis, current treatment, and the specific reason for referral to NSIRH.

Insurance & Payments
What insurance does NSIRH accept?

We accept the Social Health Authority (SHA) and most major Kenyan corporate insurance schemes. Contact our Finance Unit on 0722-626-641 before admission to confirm your specific policy coverage and pre-authorisation requirements.

How do I pay for services?

We accept payment via M-Pesa Paybill 222-222 (with a unique account number from the cashier), eCitizen bank transfer, and credit/debit card at the main cashier's office. See our Payments page for step-by-step instructions.

Treatment & Rehabilitation
How long does rehabilitation take?

Every recovery journey is unique. The duration depends on the injury's severity, neurological level, associated complications, and the patient's motivation. It can range from a few months to over a year. Our multidisciplinary team tracks progress regularly and sets individualised goals.

Does NSIRH fabricate orthotics and prosthetics on-site?

Yes. Our Orthopaedic Technology Unit designs, fabricates, and fits custom orthotic devices (braces, splints, AFOs) and prosthetic limbs on-site, ensuring every device is perfectly tailored for the patient's anatomy and functional goals.

Visiting & Facilities
What are the visiting hours?

Visiting hours are 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM and 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM daily. Please note that no food or fruits from outside are permitted for patients to maintain food safety standards.

What community reintegration support is available?

Our Medical Social Work Services Unit provides comprehensive support including home modification advice, links to job training, peer support groups, and connection to community resources to ensure a successful transition back into your community after discharge.
