July 11, 2026 — Kaptarkok Primary School, Elgeyo Marakwet County — The National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital (NSIRH) proudly participated in the 10th Edition of the Kaptagat Integrated Conservation Programme (KICP) Medical Camp, a major national event graced by H.E. the Deputy President, Prof. Kithure Kindiki. The camp brought together government agencies and partners to promote community wellbeing through integrated health and conservation services.
For NSIRH, the medical camp provided a vital platform to extend specialized spinal health and rehabilitation services closer to communities, while raising awareness on spinal injury prevention, disability management, and referral pathways. Organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Health – State Department for Medical Services, the outreach formed part of the Government’s National Tree Growing and Restoration Campaign, which integrates environmental conservation with community health promotion.
The NSIRH delegation was led by Ag. Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Oliver O. Soren, alongside Dr. Dennis O. Otwori, Head of Division, Spinal Health and Specialized Services, and Dr. Grace Kinyanjui, Head of Unit, Surgical Services. The multidisciplinary team included specialists in surgery, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, orthopaedic technology, orthopaedic trauma, nursing, and clinical services — all working together to deliver comprehensive care.
Speaking during the outreach, the NSIRH team emphasized the importance of early assessment and timely referral for individuals experiencing spinal-related challenges. The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening community linkages to ensure patients nationwide can access specialized spinal injury management and rehabilitation services. The activity also enhanced awareness of NSIRH’s mandate as Kenya’s Centre of Excellence in Spinal Injury Care, promoting preventive healthcare, strengthening referral pathways, and improving access to specialized services beyond the hospital setting.
NSIRH expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Health, local leadership, partner institutions, and community members for their support in making the medical camp a success. Ag. CEO Dr. Oliver O. Soren commended the multidisciplinary team for their dedication and professionalism, noting that their efforts continue to empower communities and advance spinal health across Kenya.
